it’s not often I share emails or feedback I receive from couples but a little before their wedding Kyah contacted me with an email that began:

the creativity, stories, images and just general amazing that arrived in my inbox was astounding. and inspiring.

it was incredibly hard to judge too.

one of the things that drives me is telling better stories – part of this for me is exploring new or different ways to tell them more completely.

each couples story is so much more than just what happens on the wedding day.

i hadn’t shot one of these type of pieces for over 18 months at least, but kobe and ben put complete faith in me.

we met up a short time before their wedding day and i purposely went in with little to no preparation or preconceived ideas about what we wanted to achieve.

no notes. no guidelines. no idea where the conversation might lead us.

templates don’t inspire me.

fortunately, the way it came together their story told itself.

this piece premiered at their wedding reception and no-one, including them, had seen a second of footage or knew what to expect.

always being up for a challenge I thought it’d be something special to include a surprise near the end too.

I found myself in a room filled with laughter, tears and there may have been just a small standing ovation and applause.

so writing is not a storytelling medium that comes easily or naturally to me. it’s something I find myself constantly working at and trying to refine.

rather than getting stuck on sentences, paragraphs, punctuation and so on, I’ll just share my thoughts in short words and phrases as I think back to amy and dave’s wedding day.

rain. laughter. cows. cow pats. more rain. the kid from jerry maguire and d’you know that the human head weighs 8 pounds? a dairy farm. last minute bridesmaid dress adjustments. stories of a family finding strength through tough times. some more rain. a girl that has absolute love for her new husband. and one of the most genuine, gentle men i’ve ever come across.

sian and ryan / main feature film

I find myself witnessing the most amazing and beautiful of things.

during these moments I actually find myself totally absorbed and immersed in what’s happening in front of me. I almost want to put down the camera so I can take it all in.

sian and ryan wrote their own vows and kept them secret from each other until the ceremony.

in a day overflowing with love, for me this was one of those moments.
